Research and teaching
Since 1972, regular teaching classes, courses and lectures at the Department of Geography, Mainz University, both to undergraduates and graduates, covering various fields of geography, climatology, environmental sciences and ecology.

A wide range of research based on in-depth field surveys was conducted in the field of geography, climatology and ecology (general and applied) covering mostly South, Southeast and East Asia.

Major research fields are as follows:

• regional climatology, in particular on monsoon climate and tropical climate
• applied climatology (with special reference to agroclimatology)
• climate change and extreme weather events
• regional geographical studies on developing countries focusing on sustainable development
• urban ecology and welfare effects of urban green space
• geoecology of tropical islands
• ecology-based tourism planning strategies
• sustainable tourism research

Close scientific cooperation with many universities in Asia, including the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing; Taiwan National Normal University, Taipeh, and Hong Kong Baptist University, partly based on official agreements of scientific cooperation between Mainz and Peradeniya University, Sri Lanka; Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, Nepal; and Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China.
External examiner for Ph.D. theses at various universities in India.

Joint research projects carried out particularly in the following countries:
