Vom 26.07-16.08.2017 erkundeten 25 Studierende unter der Leitung von Dr. Kurt Emde und Dipl.-Geogr. Elisabeth Sommerlad die kanadischen Atlantikprovinzen Nova Scotia, New Brunswick und Newfoundland. Die Route führte zunächst von Halifax über das Annapolis Valley an die Bay of Fundy, von wo aus die Reise über Saint John und Moncton auf die Halbinsel Cape Breton weiterging. Nach einer Fährüberfahrt wurde die Westküste von Newfoundland bereist (hauptsächlich Gros Morne Nationalpark). Anschließend wurden Standorte entlang des Cabot Trails (wieder Nova Scotia) aufgesucht, bevor es wieder nach Halifax zurückging.
Neben humangeographischen Themen wie Siedlungs- und Kulturgeschichte (Halifax, Fort Beauséjour, Louisbourg, Grand Pré/Acadien), Migration (Pier 21/Halifax), Stadtentwicklung (Corner Brook), First Nations (Membertou/North Sydney), Fischerei (Cow Head), Forst- und Landwirtschaft (Annapolis Valley) und Montan- und Bergbauindustrie (North Sydney) wurden zahlreiche physisch-geographische Themen behandelt: Geologie und Geomorphologie (z.B. St. Martin’s Sea Caves, Joggins Fossil Cliffs, Gros Morne Nationalpark, Tablelands) , glazialer und periglazialer Formenschatz (bspw. Ingonish, Gros Morne Nationalpark), Klimageographie (bspw. Digby), Böden und Bodenschätze (Smokey Trail/Ingonish), Gezeiten und Meeresströmungen (Bay of Fundy, Hopewell Rocks) und Küstenformen (bspw. Green Gardens, Cape Enrage).
Die Studierenden konnten auf der Reise die vorher im Seminar erarbeitete Theorie „live“ erleben. Beeindruckende Landschaften, imposante Wanderungen, einheimische Tiere, kanadische Alltagskultur und der gute Zusammenhalt der Gruppe machten die Exkursion für alle zu einem unvergesslichen Erlebnis und zu einem wahren Highlight des Studiums.
