Geography? Known as a school subject – but as a program of study?
The Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs in Geography appeal to committed, communicative and internationally oriented students. An interest in society, the economy, the environment, physical and social processes and new technologies is a prerequisite; specific appointments are developed during the program of study.

Students learn and practice geography methods and knowledge in lectures, seminars, field exercises and internships. Field exercises and stays abroad play an important role here, where the theoretical knowledge acquired is applied in practice. The aim is to recognize and interpret complex issues in the human environment and thereby train a systemic way of thinking. These human-environment interactions are increasingly coming into focus in the course of globalization processes as well as climate and environmental changes.

The application of geoinformation systems and the field of cartography offers a wide range of employment opportunities on the job market for geographers. Not only due to the increased demand for high-quality map material in the field of geoinformation systems, but also due to the problems of future climate development and its effects on societies, geography students are opting for an extremely future-oriented subject.

A degree in Geography imparts interdisciplinary skills and opens up a wide range of career prospects in environmental and climate protection, spatial planning, business, education and science. Graduates analyze human-environment relationships, develop sustainable solutions and work with geodata.

In addition to working in research, advising or administration, there is also the opportunity to do a doctorate, which opens up career paths in academic research or management positions. The broad methodological training makes the program of study future-oriented and adaptable.

The possible career fields for graduates are as diverse as geography itself – be it in the private sector or in the public service. Geographers work, among other things:

  • in the education and school sector, e.g. as teachers or in educational counseling
  • in environment protection, with nature conservation organizations, authorities or NGOs
  • in urban and regional planning, for example in planning offices or local authorities
  • in tourism and public relations, e.g. in destination management or marketing
  • in international organizations dealing with sustainable development and global challenges
  • in management consulting, e.g. in the areas of geographic information systems (GIS) or market research
  • in science, research institutions or higher education institutions
  • in market research, where they analyze data and forecast trends

Thanks to their broad methodological training, geographers are in a position to solve socially relevant questions in an interdisciplinary manner and to play a key role in various sectors.

The doctorate in Geography can be completed with a Dr. rer. nat. or Dr. phil. depending on the thematic focus of the doctoral dissertation and the chosen minor subjects due to the dual focus on the natural sciences and the humanities or social sciences. As a rule, admission to the doctorate requires a full academic degree (Master’s degree, Diplom, Magister, teacher education) in the subject of geography.
