Curriculum vitae and academic career:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1958:<\/strong> Birth in Stetten\/Pfalz<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1969 – 1978: <\/strong>Attended the Mathem.-Naturwiss. Nordpfalzgymnasium in Kirchheimbolanden, Abitur<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1978 – 1979: <\/strong>German Armed Forces in Gerolstein, Kastellaun and Rheinbach<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1980 – 1985: <\/strong> Program ofstudy<\/strong> at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz: Geography (Diplom, track of study geoecology) as well as botany and zoology. Topic of the Diploma thesis:<\/em> “Analysis and evaluation of the landscape-ecological potential of the districts of Ober-Olm and Klein-Winternheim. A contribution to the landscape plan of the municipality of Nieder-Olm” <\/em><\/strong>. <\/em>The diploma thesis was funded within a larger research project of the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of the Environment at the Institute of Geography of the University of Mainz: extensive land use mapping, chemical water analyses (laboratory work), establishment of a terrain-climatic monitoring network in the district: measurements and analyses (1-year measurement campaign)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1985-1989<\/strong>: Doctorate<\/strong>. Dr. rer. nat.; Topic: <\/strong>“Ecological Impacts on the Tea Production of Sri Lanka”<\/em><\/strong> (entire doctoral dissertation in English). Included 19 months of field work in Sri Lanka (Feb-Apr 1985, Sep 1985-Dec 1986). Content: Comparative analysis of existing data on climate, soils, yield and management as well as socio-economic structures in 107 tea plantations with the aim of developing a comprehensive concept for sustainable tea cultivation in Sri Lanka. Doctoral supervisor: Prof. Dr. Dr.h.c.mult. Manfred Domr\u00f6s. Funding: Doctoral scholarship from the Institute for the Promotion of Gifted Students of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS scholarship student: Oct 1985-Nov 1988). The published doctoral dissertation was forwarded by the then Minister of Agriculture of Sri Lanka to all tea plantations for use as a guiding agricultural concept. 1990:<\/strong> Awarded the Science Prize (see under Award). Numerous scientific presentations in Sri Lanka and establishment of extensive experimental fields to further develop the concept. To this day, scientific monitoring and advising of organic tea plantations in Sri Lanka and India (Assam, Terai, Dooars and Darjeeling). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1989: <\/strong>Hired at the Institute of Geography at the University of Mainz<\/p>\n\n\n\n

07\/1997: <\/strong>Habilitation<\/strong>. Priv.-Doz. Dr. rer. nat. habil.; awarded the venia legendi in “Geography”; Faculty of Geosciences, University of Mainz; topic of the professorial dissertation “Typification of annual precipitation variations in north-eastern India as a function of the Indian monsoon climate”.<\/em><\/strong> In 1990, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1995 research trips lasting several months each for field work and data collection in Northeast India: Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Sikkim, West Bengal (Terai, Dooars and Darjeeling region), two 3-month short-term lectureships at the Assam Agricultural University in Jorhat, Assam. Evaluation of climate data collected locally from 237 stations (1961-1990). With the help of multivariate analysis methods, different types of annual precipitation variations were identified in Northeast India and their spatial distribution was interpreted in terms of a climageographical analysis (regionalization). Special attention was also paid to the effects of the monsoon on the landscape balance and human-environment relationships. Funding: German Research Foundation (DFG) and Indian National Science Academy in New Delhi (INSA) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

04\/1998 – 09\/1999: <\/strong>3 semesters as substitute for the C4 professorship for “Physical Geography” at the Institute of Geography of the Technical University of Darmstadt<\/strong>. With committed students, voluntary development and establishment of a research outpost of the TU Darmstadt on an ecological school farm in Schwerbach (Hunsr\u00fcck): climate-ecological measurements and analyses on the Hunsr\u00fcck plateau, studies on sustainable ecological management in low mountain areas, structural change in agriculture and development opportunities for organic farming in the Hunsr\u00fcck. Project seminars with activating teaching and learning methods, concept development “ecological learning” and its implementation with school classes. Financial support: various commercial enterprises from Darmstadt. Until the closure of the institute in 2007, evaluator and examiner at the TU Darmstadt <\/p>\n\n\n\n

10\/1999: <\/strong>Resumption of duties at the Institute of Geography at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz<\/p>\n\n\n\n

03\/2003: <\/strong>Award of the title -apl. professor- <\/p>\n\n\n\n

04\/2007 – 09\/2008:<\/strong> 3 semester substitute for the W3 professorship for “Geography and its Didactics” and Head of the Department of Geography at the higher education institution in Karlsruhe<\/strong>. Research and teaching projects on “Climate and Education” with the sub-projects “Climate field trip through Karlsruhe”, “Climate makes school”, “Climate detectives” as well as a digital and temporally high-resolution measuring network on the urban climate of Karlsruhe with 12 stations. Collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Environment in Stuttgart, various schools in Karlsruhe and a manufacturer of measuring equipment in Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg <\/p>\n\n\n\n

10\/2008: <\/strong>Resumption of duties at the Institute of Geography at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, until today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
