There is some evidence to suggest a connection with the “global warming” problem, but it also has to do with human behaviour itself: there are more and more people worldwide, and settlement areas are becoming ever narrower (urbanization) and/or are increasingly expanding into risk zones. Inappropriate behavior and economic practices increase vulnerability in these areas and lead to so-called “man-made hazards” in many places, which further increases the potential for damage. The effects of global climate change are particularly evident throughout the Alpine region. This leads to an intensification of the conflict between nature conservation, economy and tourism in the narrow Alpine valleys. In addition, the thawing of permafrost areas and the dramatic retreat of glaciers are leading to serious changes in the entire landscape balance. To this end, landscape and climate ecology studies are being carried out in the Alpine region, including in the Bavarian Alps (Schneeferner and Eiskapelle), Ötztal, Kaunertal and Pitztal (Tyrol, Austria); Montafon (Vorarlberg, Austria), Passeiertal and Etschtal (South Tyrol, Italy), Maggiatal – Lago Maggiore (Ticino, Switzerland), Engadin (Graubünden, Switzerland) and Rhône Valley with studies and experiments on the Aletsch and Rhône glaciers (Valais, Switzerland) and Oberaar glacier (Canton Bern, Switzerland).

Research projects: Domestic

Long-term project since 1995: Investigations into the terrain climate in the Gundersheim district (southern Rhenish Hesse):
With annual precipitation of 450-500 mm, southern Rhenish Hesse is one of the areas with the lowest precipitation in the whole of Germany. With the help of 3 permanently measuring climate stations with different topographical location parameters in the district of Gundersheim (Wonnegau, southern Rhenish Hesse) since 1995 the terrain climate is recorded and evaluated. Mobile climate measurements provide additional information on the climatology of the terrain. The investigations pay particular attention to heavy rainfall events in summer as well as dry periods, cold air runoff, cold air lake formation and frost hazards. These special climatic conditions in the study area have a considerable impact on the landscape and, in particular, on the intensively farmed cultural landscape. The long-term measurements should help to gain a better understanding of the special orographical multiple-lying situation from a hygric and thermal point of view. Station supervisor: Dipl.-Geogr. Gleisweiler is considered to be particularly thermally favored, which is reflected above all in the mild winters and the rather rare late frosts. The location in the warm slope wind zone of the Haardtrand at approx. 300 m above sea level is one of the reasons why warmth-loving plants can be found here and can therefore survive the winter. Very special warmth indicators, as an expression of southern evergreen vegetation, can be found in the over 150-year-old and very impressive park of the Bad Gleisweiler private clinic. Here, the unique topographical situation probably plays a dominant role as a climatic factor. Microclimatic, mesoclimatic and macroclimatic issues are addressed in order to characterize and understand the unique climatic-ecological features of the Gleisweiler region.

Another focus is research into the possible effects of climate change on sugar beet cultivation in Rhineland-Palatinate and southern Hesse: agriculture is a regional economic sector that is significantly affected by climate change. The project analyzes the interactions between weather/climate and yield formation in sugar beet in order to derive sustainable adaptation strategies to climate change in order to secure future agricultural production. The aim is to research the effects of climate change on sugar beet cultivation in Rhineland-Palatinate in detail and with the highest possible spatial resolution in order to help secure the future of environmentally friendly and sustainable sugar beet cultivation. At the same time, the findings will be used directly for practical purposes by the network of project sponsors and partners. The aim is also to adapt the cultivation concept to the specific cultivation conditions in Rhineland-Palatinate, which are changing due to climate change. A data basis will be developed on the basis of which decision-making processes and adaptation strategies can be developed that contribute to stabilizing and securing the future of regional sugar beet cultivation.

Other key regions are Rhenish Hesse, Northern Palatinate (Donnersberg region), Westerwald, Eifel and the valley landscapes of the Moselle and Rhine, as well as Hesse, Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria

Regional geography in various federal states:
Studies on regional geography in Rhineland-Palatinate, Hesse, Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria and the coastal regions of Schleswig-Holstein.

Learning through research and discovery: teaching projects

As part of my courses, I have repeatedly worked on research questions using activating forms of teaching and learning, which have led to interesting results. There is some evidence to suggest a connection with the "global warming" problem, but it also has to do with human behaviour itself: there are more and more people worldwide, and settlement areas are becoming ever narrower (urbanization) and/or are increasingly expanding into risk zones. Inappropriate behavior and economic practices increase vulnerability in these areas and lead to so-called "man-made hazards" in many places, which further increases the potential for damage. To this end, landscape and climate ecology studies are being carried out in the Alpine region, including in the Bavarian Alps (Schneeferner and Eiskapelle), Ötztal, Kaunertal and Pitztal (Tyrol, Austria); Montafon (Vorarlberg, Austria), Passeiertal and Etschtal (South Tyrol, Italy), Maggiatal - Lago Maggiore (Ticino, Switzerland), Engadin (Graubünden, Switzerland) and Rhône Valley with studies and experiments on the Aletsch and Rhône glaciers (Valais, Switzerland) and Oberaar glacier (Canton Bern, Switzerland).

Martin Werner. The data is collected using recognized measurement technology and regularly published on the project homepage "Gundersheim climate station" published. Special attention is paid to the monthly thermoisopleth diagrams and the temperature/precipitation diagrams since 2004 as well as the detailed climate review for the Gundersheim region since 2001.

Geographyand Climate and climate change in the region:
Research and teaching projects in Rhineland-Palatinate with climate-geographical analyses and effects of climate change (Klimawandelfolgen):

One of the focal points is around the municipality of Gleisweiler (Südliche Weinstraße district, 6 km west of Landau).
