Erasmus+ is the EU program for the grant of education, training, youth and sport in Europe. On June 15, 2022, the European education program Erasmus+ celebrated its 35th anniversary of passing. It is a unique European success story and the European Union’s best-known program. In the meantime, it has supported international stays for an estimated 12 million people – almost one million of them Germans in higher education.
“Enriching lives, openingminds.” is the slogan of the 2021-2027 EU program phase. Erasmus+ activities focus on the mobility of learners and teaching staff. Through the unique experience of living, studying, completing an internship or traveling abroad, participants gain self-confidence and improve their soft skills, discover other cultures and build interpersonal and professional relationships with people from other countries. In higher education, blended intensive programs combine online learning and teamwork with short-term physical mobility abroad. Mobility activities are complemented by language learning opportunities via the Erasmus+ instrument for online language support (Online Language Support, OLS) or other additional forms of language support. It is expected that around 10 million individuals, including students, learners, teaching staff, professors, teachers and trainers from all sectors, will participate in mobility activities abroad over the course of the program. The 2021-2027 program focuses on social inclusion, the green and digital transitions and the grant of young people’s participation in democratic life. The Erasmus+ app provides support at every stage of the journey. You can find more information on social media at @EUErasmusPlus.
The Institute of Geography currently has agreements with 17 universities in eleven countries.
A stay abroad is often one of the most exciting experiences in a student’s career. However, it also presents an organizational and logistical hurdle that raises many questions.
If you are personally considering moving to other European countries, the following brief instructions will show you the first steps. It is best to start gathering information about a stay abroad as early as possible. In any case, allow plenty of time for an application: if you are going abroad with the ERASMUS program, start planning at least ONE year in advance.
Before you actually apply for the program, you should think about the following points:
Please submit your application to Dr. Sandra Schellack, Internationalization Office FB09.
- Letter of motivation
(stating academic and personal reasons, describing your study plans at the host institution; naming your “desired destination” and two alternatives) - Curriculum vitae
(in tabular form) - List of credits earned to date
(transcript of records for completed examinations; available from the student advising office) - Languagecertificates/certificates
(e.g. high school diplomas, other language courses)
- Credits (previous credits earned at Mainz University and academic qualification acquired)
- Duration of study (duration of the program of study to date)
- Motivation (academic and personal reasons for studying abroad with ERASMUS)
- Study project (planning and feasibility of the study project at the host institution)
- Language proficiency (at least good knowledge of the language of instruction and, if necessary, basic knowledge of the national language if this differs from the language of instruction)
- Social aspects (e.g. social commitment in clubs, voluntary work, language tandems, employee of the General Students’ Committee)
If you have any questions about credits for study abroad and Learning Agreements, please contact the responsible ERASMUS+ subject coordinators/academic advisory offices.
